7 Positive Ways to Talk to Your Child’s School

These 7 tips will help you build a strong relationship with your child’s primary school.

Having a good home / school relationship makes it much easier to talk to school when there’s a problem. As a parent or carer, you have a lot to offer. You know your child best and can help everyone understand them better. School will often see a different side to your child and can share ideas to help with learning. Together, you make a powerful team.

7 tips to talk to school

When you need to have a conversation with school, these simple ideas will help you create a great relationship:

1: Make an appointment

Arrange an appointment with your child’s teacher so you are not interrupted, and have time to talk things through. It’s tempting to grab them at drop-off or pickup time, but this is a busy time for the teacher and they’re unlikely to be able to give you their full attention for long. Let them know what you want to talk about so they can prepare properly for the meeting.

2: Prepare in advance

Before talking to school staff, make a list of questions you want to ask so that you don’t forget what you want to say. Bring your questions with you to the meeting and a notebook to record the main issues discussed.
