How to Get a Toddler to Sleep

Find out how to make an effective bedtime routine, and help your young child get a good night’s sleep.

Trying to get a toddler to sleep might sound easy, but many parents and carers know it can be really hard to get young children sleeping through the night.

Sleep is vital for your child’s physical and mental development, and it is helps their overall well-being, too. Getting a good amount of sleep can help improve their attention, memory, and learning. Sleep gives your child time to rest and recharge after a long day, ready for the next.

So, making sure your child is getting enough sleep is important, but just how much should they have? Although every child is different, there are recommended amounts of sleep for children:

Recommended hours of sleep

    • For newborns:  0-3-month-olds need 14-17 hours a night.

    • For infants: 4-11-month-olds need 12-15 hours a night.

    • For toddlers: 1-2-year-olds need 11-14 hours a night.

    • For preschool age: 3-5-year-olds need 10-13 hours a night.

    • For school- age: 6-13-year-olds need 9-11 hours a night.

How do I know if my child is getting enough sleep?

If your child doesn’t get enough sleep, it can impact the next night’s sleep, too. They’re more likely to fall asleep in the afternoon/early evening because they feel tired, have difficulties settling at bedtime, and, frustratingly, could wake up even earlier in the morning!
